Our Story
Kurunzi Fund is a dream that was inspired on the slopes of Mount Kenya. The passion and drive of a young Kenyan to create opportunities for girls found a home with an American during a three-day ascent up mother mountain. During hours of conversation information was shared, ideas brainstormed, and a plan put into motion to turn the dream into a reality.
At just 20 years old, Kennedy was already running his own guiding and gear business, but he was not content with that success. His dream is that all girls have the opportunity to attend school and the freedom to choose their own future. Growing up he felt the inequities experienced by the girls in his community compared to the scholarships and opportunities offered to boys.
As a passionate female leader and role model in her own community and the mother of a young woman, this idea resonated with Elizabeth and the connection was made.
Motivated by their shared dream Kennedy and Elizabeth began working together to establish Kurunzi Fund and Kurunzi Foundation. In 2022 Kennedy became the youngest person to ever register an NGO in Kenya and built a board of exceptional diversity, character, and expertise to make Kurunzi Fund a reality.
We provide educational support for girls and young women living in extreme poverty, specifically targeting those escaping female genital mutilation and early child marriage in pastoral communities of Northern Kenya. Kurunzi Fund support is comprehensive and includes: boarding school tuition, room and board, uniforms, basic necessities and small spending money, as well as learning opportunities outside the classroom. We mentor each sponsored student from primary school through secondary school to further develop life skills, promote teamwork, and provide on the job training so that each girl becomes a financially contributing member of society.
